Webster Lake Anglers Youth Tournament
As part of our mission of promoting the sport of fishing to others as well as our commitment to community activism, the Webster Lake Anglers holds a Youth Tournament each year. The WLA Youth Tournament is traditionally held on the Saturday of the “free-fishing weekend” as set by the State of Massachusetts (June 7-8 in 2008).
The Youth Tournament is an important event in the WLA calendar, affording us an opportunity to have a fun day on the water while exposing the sport of fishing to some of our area’s youngsters, some of whom have never even held a fishing pole. Each kid is given their own tackle box (complete with all the necessities to land a big one) and a new rod and reel. They are then teamed with a WLA member head out on the water for a short four-hour tournament. While on the water, they receive “expert” instruction from their WLA teammates as to the subtle intricacies of understanding the mind and habits of the elusive bass.
Meanwhile, back on land, other WLA members are hard at work preparing the meal of a lifetime (hamburgers and hot dogs, fresh off the grill!) in anticipation of the return of their bass-fishing buddies. After every belly is full, prizes are awarded to the top finishers and another day of fishing is in the books.
The WLA would like to thank all of those who contribute to this event in so many ways. Also, to the parents and youth groups (cub scouts, boy scouts, Finally, a special thank you goes out from all of our members to Youth Director Matt McCabe for his tireless effort at making this event a success year after year. |
